Tech4Development Initiatives
Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa leverages technology as a powerful tool for inclusive development, innovation, and social transformation. Through its Tech4Development Initiatives, YiSHDA aims to bridge the digital divide by equipping young people especially girls and underserved populations with the skills, knowledge, and access needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
These initiatives integrate digital literacy, STEM education, and innovation-driven learning to empower participants with practical competencies that can be applied to real-life challenges. By creating safe and accessible learning environments, YiSHDA fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving while encouraging youth to explore opportunities in technology and entrepreneurship.
With a strong focus on gender inclusion, the Tech4Development portfolio actively works to close the gender gap in STEM by inspiring girls to pursue careers in technology and innovation. Through partnerships, mentorship, and hands-on learning, YiSHDA is nurturing a new generation of digitally skilled, confident, and forward-thinking leaders who can drive sustainable development in their communities.
MakeHer Space (Completed)
The Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa MakeHer Space (MHS) Project is a transformative initiative implemented in partnership with Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre. The project brought together young girls and facilitators to explore technology through hands-on learning and practical innovation.
Focused on girls aged 10–25 years both in-school and out-of-school—the initiative introduced participants to simple tech builds and problem-solving approaches that can be applied to real-life challenges. By creating inclusive and supportive learning environments within technology hubs, MakeHer Space inspired participants to explore opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).
The project directly addressed the gender gap in STEM fields by equipping girls with foundational digital and technical skills while boosting their confidence and interest in pursuing tech-related careers. Through mentorship, collaboration, and experiential learning, participants were empowered to see themselves as innovators and future leaders in technology.
Girls in Information and Communications Technology (Girls in ICT) (Ongoing)
YiSHDA’s Girls in ICT initiative was implemented as part of the global observance of Girls in ICT Day, led by the International Telecommunication Union. The program served as a platform to inspire and educate young girls on opportunities within the STEM ecosystem.
The initiative featured digital skills training, mentorship sessions with female professionals in tech, and exposure visits to technology hubs. These activities provided participants with practical knowledge and real-world insights into careers in ICT.
By encouraging participation and building capacity, the program contributed to narrowing the gender divide in technology, fostering ambition, and equipping girls with the tools needed to thrive in a digital world.
Young Readers Innovation Hub (YRiH) – Upcoming Project
The Young Readers Innovation Hub (YRiH) is an upcoming project designed to integrate literacy, creativity, and technology into a dynamic learning environment for children and young adolescents.
The initiative will establish safe and engaging hubs where young people can access books, multimedia resources, and digital learning tools. Beyond promoting a strong reading culture, YRiH will incorporate digital literacy sessions and innovation-driven activities aimed at improving comprehension, critical thinking, and creative expression.
Through this project, YiSHDA seeks to nurture a new generation of informed, imaginative, and tech-savvy learners, bridging the gap between traditional literacy and modern digital competencies while preparing young people for future opportunities.
EmpowerHER Digital & Health Equity Initiative (Upcoming)
Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa EmpowerHER Digital & Health Equity Initiative is an upcoming, integrated program designed to bridge the gap between digital inclusion and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) access for adolescent girls and young women. The initiative responds to the dual challenge of limited access to technology and inadequate health information, particularly in underserved and marginalized communities.
The project will leverage digital tools and community-based approaches to provide participants with essential digital literacy skills alongside accurate, age-appropriate SRH education. Through structured training sessions, beneficiaries will gain competencies in online safety, digital communication, and access to credible health information platforms.
Key components include the establishment of safe digital learning spaces, delivery of comprehensive SRH education, mentorship programs linking participants with female professionals in health and technology, and partnerships with youth-friendly health service providers. The initiative will also incorporate community engagement and advocacy to address cultural barriers and promote supportive environments for girls.
Expected outcomes include improved digital literacy, increased access to SRH information and services, enhanced confidence and decision-making among participants, and reduced inequalities in both digital and health access.
Through EmpowerHER, YiSHDA aims to create a new generation of empowered, informed, and digitally connected young women capable of shaping healthier and more equitable futures.
SheLeads Innovation Hub (Upcoming)
Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa SheLeads Innovation Hub is an upcoming flagship initiative aimed at empowering young women and girls with the skills, resources, and networks needed to become leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. The project is designed to address gender gaps in leadership, technology, and enterprise by creating a safe and inclusive space where women can learn, collaborate, and build impactful solutions.
The hub will provide integrated training in leadership development, digital and STEM skills, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. Participants will gain practical knowledge in areas such as business development, innovation design, financial literacy, and technology application. In addition, the initiative will offer mentorship opportunities by connecting participants with experienced female professionals and industry leaders.
A key component of SheLeads is its focus on innovation and enterprise incubation. The hub will support participants in developing ideas into viable ventures through coaching, access to tools, and potential seed funding opportunities. It will also foster peer learning, networking, and collaboration among young women across different sectors.
Expected outcomes include increased female participation in leadership and innovation spaces, improved economic empowerment, and the creation of sustainable women-led enterprises. Through this initiative, YiSHDA aims to nurture confident, skilled, and forward-thinking women who will drive inclusive development and social change.
