Through its Library Development Programs, YiSHDA is committed to transforming public and community libraries into dynamic, technology-driven learning hubs that provide equitable access to information and opportunities. These initiatives focus on strengthening the capacity of library professionals, promoting digital inclusion, and equipping communities with the skills needed to navigate the modern information landscape.
Comprehensive Digital Information Program for Librarians (C-DIP 1.0) (Completed)
Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa Comprehensive Digital Information Program for Librarians (C-DIP 1.0) was a strategic capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen the digital competencies of librarians and enhance access to electronic information resources. With support from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, the program focused on equipping library professionals with the skills needed to effectively utilize modern digital tools and global knowledge platforms.
A key component of the initiative was training participants on the use of E-libraryUSA and other international databases, enabling librarians to expand the range and quality of information services available to their users. Through a series of targeted workshops and hands-on learning sessions, participants developed practical skills in digital information management, online research techniques, and resource curation.
The program significantly improved the accessibility and availability of e-resources across participating libraries, transforming them into more responsive and technology-driven learning environments. By enhancing the capacity of librarians, C-DIP 1.0 strengthened the role of libraries as critical hubs for knowledge dissemination, research support, and community education in the digital age.
Media and Information Literacy for Public Libraries (MILLs) Project (Completed)
The Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa Media and Information Literacy for Public Libraries (MILLs) Project – Completed was a targeted capacity development initiative designed to equip library professionals with the skills needed to address the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation in today’s digital age.
Implemented across the North-Central region of Nigeria with support from the U.S Mission in Nigeria, the program focused on strengthening the competencies of librarians through specialized training in media and information literacy. Participants were equipped with practical skills in critical thinking, fact-checking, information verification, and responsible digital engagement. These sessions enabled librarians to better understand how information is created, shared, and consumed, and how to guide users in identifying credible and reliable sources.
Beyond individual capacity building, the program emphasized the role of librarians as educators and community influencers. Participants were empowered to cascade their knowledge to library users and the wider community through awareness sessions, workshops, and outreach activities. This approach helped to promote responsible information consumption and foster digital citizenship among diverse audiences.
The impact of the MILLs Project has been significant, enhancing the position of libraries as trusted sources of accurate and reliable information. By strengthening the capacity of library staff, the initiative contributed to building more informed, resilient, and critically aware communities capable of navigating the complexities of the modern information ecosystem.
Beyond Access Nigeria Project (Completed)
The Beyond Access Nigeria Project, funded by IREX, was a transformative capacity development initiative aimed at repositioning public libraries as 21st-century innovation and learning hubs. Implemented to strengthen the role of libraries in national development, the project focused on shifting traditional library systems into dynamic spaces that support skills acquisition, digital inclusion, and community engagement.
A core component of the initiative was equipping libraries with the tools, knowledge, and strategies needed to support young Nigerians in building competencies for economic empowerment. Through targeted training programs, librarians were introduced to modern service delivery approaches, user-centered design, and innovative programming tailored to community needs. In addition, infrastructure and technological support enabled libraries to integrate digital tools and resources, expanding access to information and learning opportunities.
The project also emphasized program development, encouraging libraries to host activities that foster creativity, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. As a result, libraries evolved into vibrant community hubs where young people could access resources, develop skills, and explore pathways to employment and self-reliance.
This initiative laid a strong foundation for the ongoing work of Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa in library development. It demonstrated the immense potential of libraries as catalysts for education, innovation, and sustainable development, particularly in empowering youth and underserved communities.
