Read to Rise Initiative: YiSHDA Launches Community Literacy & Learning Hub Initiative to Transform Learning Opportunities for Children and Young People

The Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa (YiSHDA) is proud to officially launch the Read to Rise — Community Literacy & Learning Hub Initiative, a transformative program designed to expand access to quality literacy resources, promote a culture of reading, and create inclusive learning opportunities for children, adolescents, and young people across underserved communities in Nigeria.

The launch of this initiative marks a significant milestone in YiSHDA’s commitment to advancing education, youth development, and sustainable human development. Through Read to Rise, we aim to address persistent literacy challenges by creating community-based spaces where learning, innovation, creativity, and personal development can thrive.

Across many communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas, children and young people continue to face barriers to educational resources, books, digital learning opportunities, and safe learning environments. Limited access to reading materials and learning support contributes to poor literacy outcomes and reduced educational opportunities. Research consistently shows that access to libraries, reading spaces, and community learning hubs significantly improves reading habits, literacy levels, educational attainment, and lifelong learning outcomes.

About the Read to Rise Initiative

The Read to Rise — Community Literacy & Learning Hub Initiative is designed to establish vibrant community learning spaces that serve as centers for literacy development, academic support, digital learning, mentorship, and community engagement.

The initiative will provide:

  1. Community reading hubs and mini libraries
  2. Access to age-appropriate books and learning materials
  3. Reading clubs and storytelling sessions
  4. Literacy and numeracy support programs
  5. Digital literacy and learning opportunities
  6. Mentorship and leadership development activities
  7. Educational outreach and community engagement programs
  8. Capacity building for teachers, volunteers, and reading champions

The initiative will also combine traditional literacy promotion with innovative learning approaches, the initiative seeks to empower learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Our Vision

We envision communities where every child has the opportunity to read, learn, and reach their full potential regardless of their socio-economic background.

Read to Rise is founded on the belief that literacy is more than the ability to read and write—it is the foundation for lifelong learning, personal growth, civic participation, and economic opportunity. Access to books, learning resources, and supportive learning environments helps children become independent learners and creates pathways for long-term educational success.

Expected Impact

Through the Read to Rise Initiative, YiSHDA aims to:

  1. Improve literacy and reading proficiency among children and adolescents.
  2. Increase access to quality educational resources in underserved communities.
  3. Foster a culture of reading and lifelong learning.
  4. Strengthen community engagement in education.
  5. Support teachers, parents, and caregivers in promoting literacy.
  6. Enhance digital learning and information literacy skills.
  7. Create safe and inclusive learning environments for young people.

In its initial phase, the initiative will engage schools, community leaders, parents, libraries, youth volunteers, and education stakeholders to establish sustainable learning ecosystems that continue to benefit future generations.

Partnerships and Community Ownership

YiSHDA recognizes that lasting educational transformation requires collaboration. The success of Read to Rise will depend on strong partnerships with schools, community organizations, government institutions, libraries, development partners, volunteers, and local stakeholders.

The initiative is designed with a community-centered approach that encourages local ownership, volunteerism, and sustainability. By empowering communities to actively participate in literacy promotion, the project will create lasting structures that continue to support learning beyond the life of any single intervention.
